Exhibitions at Sisimiut Museum

The first humans in Greenland. The exhibition displays material from ten years of archaeological excavations at Saqqaq culture settlements near Sisimiut. The Saqqaq people were the first humans in Greenland. They settled in the Sisimiut area about 4.000 years ago.






The collection of V.C. Frederiksen. Tools and house items which the minister V.C. Frederiksen collected during 1902-22. The collection includes the beautiful models of the early 20th century daily life, by Gert Lyberth, among other things.


Inventory from the old Church. Some of the items from the old church can be seen on the exhibition. Among them, the original altarpiece from approximately 1650, as well as a painting created by a Greenlander in the 1790'ties.

The peat house is a reconstruction of an early 20th century Greenlandic residence. The house is arranged with cloth, house items, tools and toys which may all be tested. Surrounding the peat house stands a traditional summer tent of skin, a kayak rack and play kayaks of stone.


Shipping in Greenland. The exhibition about shipping in Greenland displays the remains of a kayak from the 18th century, a woman's boat as well as locally constructed fishing vessels from the middle of the 20th century. In addition, some old SABB boat engines are exhibited.

The Poul Madsen collection. This collection of handcraft, art, house items and ethnographic objects has been gathered over a period of fifty years. The part of the collection originating in Sisimiut now belongs to the museum.


Alternating exhibitions. In the exhibition room of the old shop the museum now displays its alternating exhibitions. There are 6-8 different exhibitions a year. See an overview of alternating exhibitions here.
